sustainable communities:

. . . locales where people live and share things in common having the necessary means for continued vitality. An article titled About Sustainable Communities at Sustainable.org explains that the ... sustainability of a community depends on creating and maintaining its economic and environmental health, promoting social equity, and fostering broad-based citizen participation in planning and implementation (source of quotes).

Donella Meadows (1941-2001) is quoted as follows: There are many ways to define sustainability. The simplest definition is: A sustainable society is one that can persist over generations, one that is farseeing enough, flexible enough, and wise enough not to undermine either its physical or its social systems of support (source of quote).

Operation Freshstart, the source at its website of the above quote, is a project of the National Center for Appropriate Technology, both listed here with links as resources for learning more about enterprise and economic development and the sustainable community. The Operation Freshstart article quoting Meadows is also a resource from which to learn. It was written by Alice Hubbard Laird of the Rocky Mountain Institute, Snowmass, CO. Another resource is the Institute for Sustainable Communities, Montpelier, Vt.
