nation:

A nation is a community of people bound together by a common ethnic origin or culture as well as a history and sometimes language. More from About.com:Geography.

nation-state:

A nation-state exists when a self-governing political entity of a certain geography having defined boundaries (a state as a body politic) and a particular cultural entity (a nation). When the word nation is used to refer to a nation state it is interchangeable with country.
