Enterprise and Economic Development; A Beginning:

Somewhere centuries ago people living, working, and sharing things in common in a location recognized that that their resources and goods had value in terms of exchange. The place was at a crossroads. Outsiders regularly went through through the community.

Outsiders stopped to purchase or barter for goods and services, local entrepreneurs became vendors. Needing to devote time to running their businesses on the street, vendors quickly learned that having a reliable network of suppliers in and around the community was worthwhile. Industrial development began with cottage industries.

A marketplace came into existence along with enterprises, A basic supply chain supported commerce. Wealth was created. The place and its surrounding area became a local economy, the crossroads a commercial center.

Demand for goods and services increased. Jobs creation came into existence Visionaries and innovators recognized that there were markets in distant places. They acted to reach them, adding a new layer of wealth building to the foundation already established locally. They may have created the first basic economy as roads and waterways became trade routes.

The community not only became sustainable but grew. In the process it seems possible that there might have been a teacher of the economic development process. Those that learned from the teacher became volunteers and worked at community economic development. Perhaps, the community decided to employ a particularly productive volunteer, at which point one might say, that was your first economic development practitioner.
